Moon mud is a fan favorite in our house! It is just so interesting to play with and seems to defy all physics. It's a little messy, but so worth it!
Materials needed:
-Cornstarch
-Water
-Food coloring
-Bowl/spoon for mixing
Combine cornstarch and water in a bowl. Mix well. Start with about 1 tbsp of cornstarch and 1 tbsp of water. If you want a larger quantity of moon mud, start with more water.
Continue adding cornstarch until you've reached your desired consistency. It needs quite a bit--more than you might think. Note: You want your moon mud mixture to look like a liquid, but feel like a solid when you press it. It will be somewhat tough to stir. And when you scrape the bottom of the bowl, the path should stay clear for a second before it seeps back together.
Once you're satisfied with the consistency, add food coloring of choice to the mixture.
Enjoy your moon mud with your child! Squeeze it in your palm to watch it turn solid and then release to let it ooze in your hand.
Activity Notes:
-It may be easier to mix in the food coloring before you combine the cornstarch and water. It was just a little tricky to blend in the food coloring after the moon mud was more solid and tougher to stir. So try adding it to the water first!
-When handling the moon mud, it will leave a powdery substance in your hands--this washes off easily with water. And if it gets on or table or other surfaces, allow the moon mud to dry and then wipe clean.
