There are so many fun activities to do with your kids this holiday season! Why not try out one that will help them learn and practice spelling? Making gingerbread is surprisingly easy, and your kids will think it's so fun to eat their letters once they are done practicing!
What You'll Need:
-ABC cookie cutters (there is a pack available on Walmart pickup- it's all the letters, numbers and basic shapes for $10!)
-Gingerbread cookie dough (here is a great recipe if you need one! https://sallysbakingaddiction.com/best-gingerbread-cookies/ )
1: Follow the baking instructions for the gingerbread cookies. Use the letter cookie cutters instead of the traditional gingerbread men ones!
2: After cooking and cooling, get your kids over to the table with the cookies.
3: Have them spell their name, find different letters, practice sight words, etc.
4: Once they are done practicing, let them eat the cookies!
*Activity Notes:
-If you're not into gingerbread, this works perfect with sugar cookies too! This is the recipe I always use for those : https://www.crisco.com/recipes/dessert/classic-sugar-cookie-cut-outs
-Try spreading the letters all over the table, and then ask things like "can you find me an "E"? ,"Can you find me the letter your name starts with?", "Can you find me the letter that makes the "mmm" sound?" etc.
-if your child is learning to read, try spelling out easy words (i.e. cat, dog, car, etc.) and then having them sound them out. If they get it right, let them eat the cookies!
-if your family is doing the individual graham cracker gingerbread houses, save the letters from your kids' names and let them spell their name on their display!
-After you're done, let your kids frost and decorate the cookies! If you're going to go to all the trouble to make all these cookies, I say make the fun last for as long as possible!
